Shan is an Elfling of seventeen summers. Having grown up as an orphan in a Human village, he has no idea what it actually means to be an Elf. He cannot speak the Keldarin language, and he knows nothing of their long storied history or culture. He’s never met his parents. In fact, he doesn’t even know if they are still alive. All he knows is that someone is trying to kill him, but he does not understand the reason why. One night, after a failed attempt on his life, the Elfling is plunged into an adventure that will forever alter his existence. He must somehow fight to stay alive, constantly fleeing from one harrowing escape after another.
Shan is certainly not a warrior, nor has he ever been trained in combat. He hasn’t really even held a weapon before. But beyond his wildest dreams, he must flee from his home, from all he has ever known, and he finds himself half a world away from a place that just might offer him sanctuary. Left without much of a choice, he is thrust headlong into a desperate journey of unbelievable peril. The Elfling is told by his guardian to trust no one along the way. But alone and afraid, he does manage to enlist the help of a few friends in his cause, and together they must struggle to survive the horrible trek facing him. He’s not absolutely sure where he’s going and yet danger seems to lurk around every corner.
Dreadful creatures from the moldy depths of legends and nightmares have crept out of their deepest, darkest haunts and have begun to hunt him mercilessly. He is hounded ruthlessly with every step of his wild flight, but when hope seems utterly lost, unexpected help encourages him to push on. Yet through it all, he’s left with only one thought racking his poor tortured soul. “Who am I?“
